SEMANA SANTA IN ANDALUCÍA

March 21-27, 2027 - Olvera, Cadiz - Four photographers

For one week, we photograph tradition and ritual in the pueblos blancos of Andalucia. We are based in the hill town of Olvera, and will also travel to nearby towns: Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas, Jerez de la Frontera, and Puente Genil. The processions pass through narrow streets at all hours of the day and night. The streets are busy with spectators, but you will not find the overwhelming masses that clog the streets of Sevilla or Malaga. It is a stunning, dynamic experience, and that is why we go.

Who is it for?

Photographers who know how to use a camera and want to maker a coherent body of work from a single week, with direct feedback. You do not need documentary experience. You need to be willing to walk up to strangers.

Who teaches it?

I am Andrew Sullivan, a documentary photographer who has worked for roughly thirty years, and I’ve led more than 25 workshops in New York City, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain, and Italy. My work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, National Geographic, and many others. My first book, Into Dust, was published in 2025 by Burn Books. My wife Sofia and I live in Olvera. I’ve photographed Semana Santa in Guatemala, Mexico and Spain. I keep returning to the way devotion and joy occupy the same body. At times it is solemn, before breaking into celebration. Sometimes both happen at once.

The Week

Opening night: Welcome dinner with wine pairings prepared by local chef.

Each day: Deep Critiques of your work. Briefings about the day ahead. Photographing processions and and daily life surrounding the sacred celebration. Editing your work with my insight.

Locations: Olvera, Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas, Jerez de la Frontera, Puente Genil, and a possible extra trip to Arcos de la Frontera for the running of the bulls.

Final day: Slideshow, group dinner prepared by local chef.

Instruction and individual feedback each day.

Ground transportation in my vehicle. You are free to rent a car if you prefer.

What is not included

Flights, lodging and most meals. You book your own travel and your own room. I will help you create your itinerary and recommend places to stay. Semana Santa is one of the busiest weeks of the year in Andalucia. I suggest booking accommodation as soon as you are confirmed.

Fee and how to apply

The fee is $1650 USD. I accept payment by bank transfer. Enrollment closes on January 31, 2027. To apply, fill in the short form below. I read every application and will reply within two days to talk about whether it is a good fit. I will not ask for payment until we have spoken.
