The Changes

The Changes

Photographs made in Harlem, 2007–2014. My grandfather was a jazz musician who played rooms like these — in Harlem, across America, through the Caribbean and South America. I knew him as an old man. These photographs were made in search of what he experienced when he was young.

Dark rooms, late hours, musicians and the people who find their way to them. The young and the not yet old, navigating something larger than themselves without always knowing it.

The music sets the changes. You navigate what you're given.
